Food and eating: the challenges for neurodivergent people

Food and eating can be major areas of difficulty for neurodivergent people, for multiple reasons: sensory sensitivities, dietary intolerances, digestive disorders, eating disorders, OCD, executive functioning, and much more. In this session we will explore some of the difficulties that neurodivergent people may have with eating, understand the possible causes, and suggest strategies to address some of the most common challenges.

Surviving and thriving as a neurodivergent parent

Every stage of parenting can be challenging in many ways, and parents who are neurodivergent can find themselves overwhelmed by some of the practical, emotional, sensory and social demands of parenthood, and the reduced opportunities to self-regulate in ways that may have worked well before having children. This workshop will support you to map out some of the key areas of difficulty, and find ways to use your (or your clients’) particular strengths and resources to navigate the main sticking points of different stages of your children’s lives.

Parenting neurodivergent children

Parenting children with diagnosed or suspected neurodivergences can bring additional challenges in many forms. You might find that all the “right ways” of doing things don’t work for your family; you might come up with ways of parenting that work beautifully for you, but attract criticism or suspicion from other people. If your children need accommodations and support, you might have to become an expert researcher, a tireless advocate, and an incredibly organised administrator, leaving not much time and emotional space to just be a parent, let alone to take care of yourself. This session will focus mainly on how to protect your own wellbeing and meet your own needs, while finding ways to parent that work for you and your family.

Neurodivergence and physical health

It is becoming increasingly clear that neurodivergent people are more likely to have a wide range of physical health problems, compared to neurotypical people. These are often chronic, complex, interacting and multisystemic conditions, including hypermobility, fatigue, pain, and circulatory and digestive problems. It is also harder for neurodivergent people to access appropriate and supportive healthcare, with obstacles including the “triple empathy problem”, sensory sensitivities, and communication barriers, and self-care can also be hard for people who have difficulties making or changing routines, maintaining a healthy diet, and so on. This session will give an overview of the main issues in this area, and some practical suggestions and resources for neurodivergent people to manage and maintain their health and access healthcare as needed.

Masking and unmasking

What does masking mean for neurodivergent people? In this workshop we will explore why, how and when neurodivergent people may mask, the ways in which it is rewarded, and the costs of masking. Masking can happen instinctively with minimal awareness; it can be a trauma response, a learned coping strategy, or a carefully-chosen and skilful self-presentation. We will look together at the various ways in which neurodivergent people may make decisions about “coming out”, finding ways and safe contexts to unmask, some possible consequences of unmasking, and how others can support these processes.

AuDHD: The Unique Profile of Autism Plus ADHD

Until very recently, the diagnostic criteria made it impossible for one person to be diagnosed with both autism and ADHD, but we now know that it's extremely common for them to co-occur. Sometimes the experiences associated with autism and ADHD seem to conspire together and each one amplifies the impact of the other. Sometimes they balance each other out, in ways which can be helpful but can also lead to a "rollercoaster" experience of everyday life. In some ways, they combine to create a unique third thing, AuDHD, which is not exactly like either autism or ADHD…

Neurodivergent procrastination and inertia

Many neurodivergent people struggle with procrastination and inertia, and can get stuck in a cycle of forgetting, avoidance, overwhelm, and a build-up of un-done tasks and their consequences, resulting in worse mood and even more procrastination. This workshop will offer tools for understanding inertia and the different forms of procrastination, the specific obstacles to different tasks for different people, and practical techniques for becoming unstuck.

Mindfulness for neurodivergent people

Mindfulness practices can have huge benefits: managing strong emotions, coping with physical pain, increasing focus, becoming more attuned to our bodies, being more present with positive experiences and more. But it also has some risks associated with it, and the ways in which it is usually taught are not often a good fit with neurodivergent brains and bodies. This workshop will…
